Description

What is MOTS-C?

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome, making it one of the few known mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs).

MOTS-c is unique because it is encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA, representing a form of mitochondrial-nuclear communication. It is released into the bloodstream where it acts as a signaling molecule that regulates metabolic homeostasis.

In preclinical research, MOTS-c has demonstrated effects on glucose regulation, fatty acid metabolism, and AMPK activation. It has also shown exercise-mimetic properties, with levels increasing during physical activity. Studies in aged mice showed improvements in physical capacity and metabolic function.

MOTS-c is not approved by the FDA for any medical use. All products are sold strictly for laboratory and research purposes only.

Research Applications

Areas of Investigation
Metabolism

Metabolic Homeostasis

Studied for its ability to regulate glucose metabolism and fatty acid oxidation through AMPK pathway activation.
Longevity

Exercise & Aging Research

Investigated as an exercise-responsive factor that declines with age, with potential implications for age-related metabolic decline.
Blood Sugar

Insulin Sensitivity

Researched for improvements in insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in preclinical models of metabolic dysfunction.
Mitochondria

Mitochondrial Signaling

Explored as a mitochondria-derived peptide that mediates communication between mitochondria and the nucleus.
