Description

What is Melanotan I?

MT-1, also known as Afamelanotide or Melanotan I, is a synthetic linear analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It consists of 13 amino acids and was developed to be a more potent and longer-lasting version of the natural hormone.

MT-1 acts primarily on the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) to stimulate melanogenesis, the production of melanin pigment in the skin. Unlike its cyclic counterpart MT-2, it has a more selective receptor profile and has been studied specifically for photoprotective applications.

Afamelanotide has been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) under the brand name Scenesse for the prevention of phototoxicity in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare genetic condition causing severe light sensitivity.

Research-grade MT-1 is not equivalent to approved formulations and is sold strictly for laboratory and research purposes only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Melanotan I research
What is MT-1?+
MT-1 (Afamelanotide/Melanotan I) is a synthetic 13-amino acid analog of alpha-MSH that stimulates melanin production through the MC1R receptor. It was developed at the University of Arizona.
How does MT-1 differ from MT-2?+
MT-1 is a linear peptide with a more selective receptor profile focused on MC1R and melanogenesis. MT-2 is a cyclic peptide with broader receptor activity including effects on sexual function and appetite.
How should MT-1 be stored?+
Lyophilized MT-1 should be stored below -18°C, away from light and moisture. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, refrigerate at 2–8°C and use within 7 days.
Has MT-1 been approved anywhere?+
Yes. The European Medicines Agency approved Afamelanotide for the treatment of otoporphyria. Research-grade product is not equivalent to the approved formulation.
Is MT-1 FDA approved?+
No. MT-1 is not FDA approved. It has EMA approval for a specific rare disease. Research-grade product is sold for laboratory purposes only.
