Description
What is Melanotan I?MT-1, also known as Afamelanotide or Melanotan I, is a synthetic linear analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It consists of 13 amino acids and was developed to be a more potent and longer-lasting version of the natural hormone.
MT-1 acts primarily on the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) to stimulate melanogenesis, the production of melanin pigment in the skin. Unlike its cyclic counterpart MT-2, it has a more selective receptor profile and has been studied specifically for photoprotective applications.
Afamelanotide has been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) under the brand name Scenesse for the prevention of phototoxicity in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare genetic condition causing severe light sensitivity.
Research-grade MT-1 is not equivalent to approved formulations and is sold strictly for laboratory and research purposes only.
