Description

What is BAC Water?

Bacteriostatic water is a sterile, non-pyrogenic preparation of water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is the standard diluent used in research laboratories for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides.

Unlike sterile water, which must be used immediately and discarded after a single use, bacteriostatic water’s benzyl alcohol preservative inhibits bacterial growth, allowing multi-dose access for up to 28 days after the first puncture. This makes it the preferred reconstitution solvent for research peptides that require repeated sampling.

Bacteriostatic water is compatible with the vast majority of research peptides. In rare cases where a compound is sensitive to benzyl alcohol, product documentation will specify an alternative solvent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BAC Water research
What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?+
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits bacterial growth and allows multi-dose use for up to 28 days. Sterile water contains no preservative and must be used immediately after opening.
How much bacteriostatic water should be used to reconstitute a peptide?+
The volume depends on the desired concentration for your research protocol. Common reconstitution volumes are 1mL or 2mL per vial. Always refer to your specific research protocol for the recommended volume.
How should bacteriostatic water be stored?+
Unopened bacteriostatic water should be stored at controlled room temperature (15–30°C / 59–86°F) away from direct light. Refrigeration is not required for the water itself. Once used to reconstitute a peptide, the solution should be refrigerated at 2–8°C.
How can I verify the quality of bacteriostatic water before use?+
Inspect the solution before each use. It should be completely clear and colorless. Do not use if you observe cloudiness, discoloration, particulate matter, or damage to the vial seal. Discard after 28 days regardless of appearance.
Is bacteriostatic water compatible with all research peptides?+
Bacteriostatic water is compatible with the majority of research peptides. In rare cases where a compound is sensitive to benzyl alcohol, the product documentation will specify an alternative reconstitution solvent.
